"Play Smart, Drive Smart" Campaign Aims to Save Young Lives on Cornwallβs Roads β½οΈπ
Cornwall FA and Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service have joined forces to launch "Play Smart, Drive Smart", a road safety campaign targeting young drivers aged 16-18 from local football clubs, both boys' and girls' teams. The next event will be hosted on Thursday 20th March at Bodmin Fire Station.
The campaign seeks to educate young drivers, coaches, parents, and guardians about road safety to prevent accidents and save lives. Attendees will learn eye-opening facts: young drivers face significantly higher collision risks, with one in five involved in an accident within a year of passing their test (BRAKE). Young males aged 17-24 are particularly vulnerable, being four times more likely to face serious or fatal injuries than older drivers.
Attendees will explore key issues, including the "Fatal Five" driving offenses that frequently lead to fatal accidents. Cornwall Fire & Rescue teams will deliver hands-on activities and real-life stories to drive home the importance of safe driving practices.
